We were invited to redevelop this tired bungalow site set in lush surroundings. The result is a cutting-edge, contemporary house influenced by traditional Japanese form, with offset pitched roofs projecting up from the sides towards a central zone, broken to allow for a stunning recessed glazed stairwell.

The main living space is to the first floor with high vaulted ceilings and large areas of glazing to take advantage of the wonderful valley views. The dramatic roof is capped with an office lookout with far reaching sea views.

The design sits comfortably within the heart of the Ilsham Valley, surrounded by heavily wooded areas forming part of the Urban Landscape Protection Area. Materials are sourced from a simple palette of high-quality natural materials including natural slate to roofs, along with vertical timber boarding and machined slate to walls. Glazing is powder coated aluminium and rainwater goods are metal.

Mature trees are retained, and new trees will be planted to enhance the verdant sylvan setting. Eco credentials include high levels of insulation, renewable energy and green roofs.

After some delicate negotiation, Planning Permission was granted by Torbay Council in May 2019.
